The Prism Quiet Book is a good opportunity to start talking about colours and shapes with your kids while you are on the move because you get to carry the book wherever you go! It is is design based on early learning concepts and skills around matching, pairing, sorting and counting.
You can begin with allowing the child to freely explore the book. Velcro and Unvelcro everything they want to.
Cover Page and Page 1:
With a beautiful rainbow on the cover page, the book opens to an apple tree with red and green apples on velcro hook and loop that can be plucked and collected in a basket.
Since the apples are on velcro, detaching them promotes the early use of pincer grip. You can also throw counting into the activity in a low key way so you get talking about numbers (while sorting the red and green apples and counting, for example). "How many apples can you count"? Or "How many apples are on the tree and how many in the basket"?
Page 2:
The shapes page allows the child to match basic geometric shapes, identify and name them. The shapes are backed by velcro and can be detached and reattached.
Each shape varies only in its structure while the colour and size remain constant (isolation of quality). By eliminating other elements (colour and size), the child in this activity will focus only on shape.
Stimulate your child by getting him to answer questions like:
“What colour is this?”
"How many sides does the square have"?
Page 3 and Page 4:
Play pretend, match and pair socks. The washing machine can be opened and has a pocket to store and wash the socks giving the child a sense of real world play that even us adults will love to play with.
Page 5:
Magnetic fishing rod that the child can use to catch the fish. A great and favourite activity that encourages hand eye coordination and fine motor skills.
Page 6:
Stack the xylophone bars according to their size. This introduces the concept of order and sequence along with size.
What more?
End with a fun scavenger hunt game maybe? Go on a hunt and pick "red objects" in the book. Or pick like coloured items.
At the back of the book is a zipper pocket - a place for everything so there aren’t loose pieces to keep track of when putting them away.
